چکیده

In January 2016, a 20-year-old female oriental small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) from Night Safari in Singapore was euthanized and diagnosed with a thyroid gland carcinoma. Postmortem examination and histology also revealed metastasis to the regional lymph nodes and severe visceral pentastomiasis. Grossly, the lymph nodes were infested, and encapsulation was observed on the visceral serosal surface. Histopathologically, the lymph nodes were encysted by a thick fibrous connective capsule with minimal inflammatory response. Pentastomiasis has been previously reported in the smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) in Malaysia. This report is the first case of severe visceral pentastomiasis in an oriental small-clawed otter with functional thyroid carcinoma.

Severe pentastomiasis in children: a report of 2 cases.

Pentastomiasis is a type of parasitic zoonosis. Most patients with pentastomiasis are asymptomatic. We report here two pediatric patients with severe pentastomiasis (porocephaliais taiwan and armilliferiasis), and the results of their 6-year and 3-year follow-ups, respectively. The manifestations and outcomes of the two cases are described. The diagnoses were established by histopathologic and/...

Phylogeography of the smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata): distinct evolutionary lineages and hybridization with the Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus)

We investigated the phylogeography of the smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) to determine its spatial genetic structure for aiding an adaptive conservation management of the species. Fifty-eight modern and 11 archival (dated 1882-1970) otters sampled from Iraq to Malaysian Borneo were genotyped (mtDNA Cytochrome-b, 10 microsatellite DNA loci). Moreover, 16 Aonyx cinereus (Asian small...

A Case of Pentastomiasis at the Left Maxilla Bone in a Patient with Thyroid Cancer

Pentastomiasis, a zoonotic parasite infection, is typically found in the respiratory tract and viscera of the host, including humans. Here, we report for the first time an extremely rare case of intraosseous pentastomiasis in the human maxilla suffering from medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). A 55-year-old male had continuously visited the hospital for MRONJ which had primaril...

Unexpected Infection with Armillifer Parasites

Visceral pentastomiasis is usually found incidentally during surgery. We describe a case of visceral pentastomiasis discovered during inguinoscrotal hernia surgery for a man from Benin, Africa. Because surgical removal of nymphs is needed for symptomatic patients only, this patient's asymptomatic pentastomiasis was not treated and he recovered from surgery uneventfully.

Echocardiographic left ventricular functional changes in acute hypothyroidism vs. subclinical hyperthyroidism in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma

Introduction:  In order to assess echocardiographic left ventricular functional indices in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), after L-T4 withdrawal (short-term overt hypothyroidism) and during TSH suppressive therapy, we have evaluated cardiac hemodynamics in a single cohort study. Methods: 24 patients with DTC were studied in two phases: 1: at least 4 weeks after L-T4 withd...
